So I managed to get out of the hospital long enough to make some blog and facebook updates. And buy a camera.
Thanks for the practical and techno-advice. We ended up looking at the Cannon s5, which for those who really like that model, just went on sale at Black's for $329 (it's about to be replaced by a different model). We ended up with a similar camera, the Panasonic Lumix FZ18. It has many of the similar functions, but no cool flip out screen. It is supposed to take better pictures though. Something called RAW format. I don't know, maybe it's a salespitch, but it is a nice easy to use camera and lighter than the Cannon.
And if it takes better pictures, I figgured that's what a camera was for in the first place.
